Pogonomyrmex bicolor is a beautiful bicolored desert harvester ant native to the Sonoran Desert region of the American Southwest. With a contrasting red and darker body, this species is a standout among harvester ants for sale and a great choice for keepers who love watching classic desert seed harvesters at work.
Like other Pogonomyrmex, P. bicolor is a semi-claustral founder, so the queen needs a few seeds and a little insect protein while she raises her first generation of workers. Once established, colonies form busy foraging trails, gather seeds into underground stores, and clear the ground around their nest entrance.
Care is simple and well suited to keepers who want a true desert species. They prefer warm temperatures and dry conditions, feed on a seed mix supplemented with insects, and need only a small hydrated area. Harvester ants can sting, so handle the colony with care.
