Harvester Ants
Harvester ants are one of the most popular and rewarding ant species for keepers of all experience levels. Known for their seed-collecting behavior, these ants build impressive underground colonies and are fascinating to watch as they organize foraging trails and tend their brood. In the US, the most commonly kept species are Pogonomyrmex barbatus (Red Harvester Ant) and Pogonomyrmex rugosus (Desert Harvester Ant), both of which thrive in warm, dry conditions with sand or loam substrate.
Harvester ant queens are claustral founders, meaning they raise their first brood entirely on stored fat reserves without any food. Once the first workers emerge, the colony begins foraging for seeds, insects, and protein sources. Colonies can grow to several thousand workers over time and are known for their digging ability and distinctive mound construction. For care tips, visit our Harvester Ant Care Guide.
