Big-Headed Ants

Big-Headed Ants (genus Pheidole) are a dimorphic species — meaning their colonies contain two distinct worker castes: small, fast-moving minor workers and large-headed major soldiers with oversized mandibles built for defense and seed-cracking. The size difference between majors and minors is dramatic and makes these ants a visually compelling species to keep and observe.

Our Big-Headed Ant species include the Giant Big-Headed Ant (Pheidole rhea) and the Soldier Big-Headed Ant (Pheidole militicida). Both are active, fast-growing colonies that do well on a diet of seeds, sugar water, and small insects. They prefer warm temperatures and moderate humidity. Big-Headed Ants are suitable for intermediate keepers. See our Pheidole Ant Care Guide for full care details. Orders ship with our 5-day live arrival guarantee.
