Big-Headed Ants for Sale (Pheidole)
Big-headed ants (genus Pheidole, including the giant Pheidole rhea) run two distinct worker castes in the same nest: small, fast-moving minor workers, and large-headed major workers — soldiers with oversized mandibles built for defense and for cracking seeds. The size gap between a major and a minor is dramatic, and it is the reason big-headed ants are one of the most watchable genera in the hobby. They are also among the fastest-growing ants you can buy: a founding queen turns into a busy colony inside a single season, so you spend your first year watching castes appear instead of waiting on brood. Big-headed ants for sale
- Giant Big-Headed Ant (Pheidole rhea). The soldier species. Workers are trimorphic, so mature colonies produce minors, majors and super majors with enormous heads. A seed harvester that also takes liquid sugars and insects, and it needs a genuinely warm nest to grow.
- Pheidole morrisii (Big-Headed Ant). The growth species, native across the central, southern and eastern US. Queens are the largest of the genus in the eastern states, brood runs 4 to 6 weeks, and a warm, well fed colony can pass 1,000 workers in its first year. It rarely takes seeds, so feed sugars and insect protein.
Both are fully claustral, both skip hibernation if you keep them warm and fed through the winter, and both start showing majors by the second or third generation. Because the minors are small, plan on a secure formicarium and a working escape barrier from day one.
