Gold Honeypot Ants (Myrmecocystus mexicanus)
Gold Honeypot Ants (Myrmecocystus mexicanus)
Description
Myrmecocystus mexicanus (Golden Honeypot Ants)
Myrmecocystus mexicanus, commonly known as the Golden Honeypot Ant, is one of the most beautiful and rewarding ant species in the United States. Native to the warm deserts of the Southwest and northern Mexico, this species is admired for its bright golden color and its fascinating replete behavior, specialized workers that hang from the ceilings of their nests, storing liquid sugars in their swollen gasters. They are a hardy, fast-growing honeypot species that rewards attentive care with rapid colony development and mesmerizing displays.
Golden Honeypot Ants are best suited for keepers who can provide consistent heat and steady access to sugars. When properly cared for, colonies quickly flourish, often producing hundreds to thousands of workers within their first year. These ants are highly visual, easy to feed, and make one of the most stunning display species in all of ant keeping.
Species Info
General:
Myrmecocystus mexicanus is a large honeypot ant that thrives in warm, dry environments. They are known for their bright yellow color, large queen size, and production of spectacular repletes that hang upside down like drops of liquid gold. This species is highly active and grows quickly under proper conditions, making it one of the best choices for anyone interested in observing honeypot behavior. Colonies tend to be nocturnal foragers but will remain active under steady warmth and light cycles in captivity.
Diet:
These ants require abundant access to sugars, as repletes serve as living storage for liquid food. Offer byFormica Ant Nectar or similar sugar solutions at all times. For protein, feed small insects such as fruit flies, crickets, or mealworms—ideally in pieces small enough for workers to carry easily to the brood. Regular protein feedings support rapid larval development and queen egg production.
Temperature:
Constant heat is essential for success. Maintain a warm zone of around 78–85°F with a slight gradient allowing a cooler resting area nearby. While they enjoy warmth, avoid overheating—steady heat is far better than intense bursts. Always ensure part of the nest retains ambient moisture to prevent brood desiccation, while keeping replete chambers drier for safety.
Nest:
Vertical formicaria such as TarheelAnts setups are ideal, allowing room for repletes to hang naturally. Choose textured walls or natural sand–clay surfaces so repletes and workers can grip easily. The outworld should have dry sand or gravel to mimic desert terrain.
Diapause:
This species does not require diapause. In fact, with steady warmth and food, M. mexicanus can grow year-round. If you wish to slow growth temporarily, you can remove heating or gently cool them for a short rest—but never refrigerate or expose to cold storage.
Growth:
Myrmecocystus mexicanus develops rapidly, with brood completing the egg-to-worker cycle in as little as 4–6 weeks under optimal heat and feeding. Colonies often reach hundreds or even thousands of workers within their first year, producing breathtaking clusters of repletes as they expand.
Queen size: 13–16 mm
Worker size: 4–13 mm
