Getting Started with Ant Keeping: A Beginner's Guide
The first time a queen ant's eggs hatch into workers, you'll probably check the test tube five times a day. Everyone does. There's something about watching a single insect turn into a functioning colony that hooks people hard — and unlike most animal hobbies, this one starts with a creature you can keep in a drawer.
Here's what you actually need to know to start keeping ants, without the fluff.
It Starts With a Queen. Only a Queen.
This is the one fact that trips up more beginners than anything else: only a queen can found a colony. Workers cannot. Males cannot. Workers are sterile females — a handful of workers in a jar will forage, dig, even care for brood if you give them some, but they will never produce more workers, and they'll die off one by one over weeks or months. Males exist for one purpose (the nuptial flight) and die shortly after.
So a "colony" without a queen isn't a colony. It's a countdown. Everything in this hobby starts with getting a queen, either by catching one after a nuptial flight or buying one from a reputable source.
What You Actually Need
The starter list is shorter than most shops want you to believe:
- A queen ant. See above.
- A test tube setup. A test tube, some water, and two cotton balls. One cotton ball holds water at the back of the tube; the other plugs the entrance. That's it — this is the standard founding chamber used by keepers everywhere, and queens can live in one for months.
- Food, eventually. Sugar water or diluted honey for energy, and small insects (fruit flies, pre-killed crickets or mealworm pieces) for protein once workers arrive. During founding, most queens don't need feeding at all — more on that below.
- Patience. Not a joke item. This is the piece of equipment most beginners run out of first.
You do not need a formicarium on day one. A colony of ten workers rattling around a nest built for five hundred will stress out and often decline. Keep them in the tube until they're clearly outgrowing it.
The Founding Stage: Leave Her Alone
Most beginner-friendly queens are fully claustral, meaning they seal themselves in, live off their own fat reserves and flight muscles, and raise their first workers without eating. Your job during this stage is genuinely to do almost nothing:
- Keep the tube dark. A drawer, a box, a sock — anything. Queens found their colonies underground in nature, and light stresses them.
- Don't disturb her. Checking once a week is plenty. Every time you pick up the tube, you're a predator as far as she's concerned. Stressed queens sometimes eat their own eggs.
- Don't feed a claustral queen. She doesn't need it, and food in the tube means mold risk.
She'll lay a small batch of eggs, which become larvae, then pupae, then her first workers. These first workers are called nanitics — noticeably smaller than normal workers, because the queen raised them on limited resources. They're not runts or a sign something's wrong. They're normal, and seeing them is the moment the colony truly begins. From egg to nanitic typically takes anywhere from four to ten weeks depending on species and temperature.
Once nanitics arrive, start offering tiny amounts of food: a drop of sugar water, a fruit fly. Small amounts. Whatever they don't eat within a day, remove.
Year One: Slow Is Normal
Set your expectations now: the first year is slow. A colony that goes from one queen to 10–20 workers in its first year is doing fine. Some species will do better, but if you're expecting a bustling hundred-worker colony by month six, you'll be disappointed and tempted to "help" in ways that hurt.
Growth compounds, though. Year two is faster than year one, and year three is when a lot of colonies suddenly feel big. The keepers who make it there are the ones who didn't fiddle during year one.
Good First Species (US Keepers)
- Camponotus (carpenter ants). Big, hardy, and forgiving of beginner mistakes. Their trade-off is speed — they're among the slower-growing genera, but the large workers are easy to observe and the colonies are tough. Probably the most recommended first genus for good reason.
- Pogonomyrmex (harvester ants). Very easy to care for — they eat seeds, which don't rot like insects do, plus the occasional insect. Active, visible, always doing something. One caveat: they can sting, so they're a look-don't-touch species.
- Lasius. Small, quick to found, and faster-growing than Camponotus. If the slow pace of year one worries you, Lasius will reward you with workers sooner and a colony that visibly grows.
Mistakes That Actually Kill Colonies
- Checking on the founding queen constantly. The number one killer of new colonies is an owner who loves them too much. Once a week. Set a reminder if you have to.
- Overfeeding. A colony of ten workers needs a drop of sugar water and a fruit fly, not a whole cricket. Uneaten food molds, and mold in a test tube can wipe out a small colony.
- Wrong humidity. Desert species kept swampy, or moisture-loving species kept bone dry, will fail no matter what else you do right. Look up your specific species' needs — "ants" is not one set of care requirements.
- Buying too big. A large established colony sounds like a shortcut, but big colonies mean big food demands, escape management, and problems that scale with worker count. Starting with a queen or a small young colony lets your skills grow alongside them.
The Short Version
Get a queen. Put her in a test tube with water and cotton. Put the tube somewhere dark. Leave her alone. When workers show up, feed lightly. Don't upgrade housing until they're crowded. That's genuinely most of it — the hobby rewards restraint more than effort, which is a strange thing to get used to, but it's the truth.
The queen you set up this month could still be laying eggs a decade from now. Few hobbies let you watch something grow on that timescale. Start small, go slow, and let her do the work.
