You can spend $300 setting up for your first queen ant, or you can spend $15. The colony genuinely does not care which one you pick — and in the founding stage, the $15 setup is usually the better one. Here's what's actually required, what's worth adding later, and what's a waste of money no matter how nice the product photos look.

The Actual Essentials

For a new queen, the whole list is: a test tube, cotton, water, and somewhere dark to put it. Once workers arrive, add food. That's the honest baseline. Everything else in this hobby is either a later-stage upgrade or a convenience.

The Test Tube Setup

The standard founding chamber is a test tube filled about a third with water, with a cotton ball pushed down against the water and another cotton ball plugging the entrance. The back cotton wicks moisture, giving the queen a humid chamber and a water source in one. It mimics the sealed underground chamber a queen would dig naturally.

Queens don't just tolerate this — they can live in a test tube for months, and small colonies often stay in one until they hit a few dozen workers. Resist the urge to move a young colony into a real nest early. A too-large nest stresses small colonies, and every move risks losing brood or injuring the queen. When the tube gets crowded or the water runs out, that's when you upgrade. Not before.

Buy a few extra tubes. They cost almost nothing, and you'll want spares for re-tubing when water depletes or mold shows up.

Formicariums: The Three Main Materials

When your colony does outgrow the tube, you'll be choosing between a few nest materials:

  • Acrylic. Best visibility by far — you see everything. Easy to clean, widely available. Downsides: it holds humidity less naturally than porous materials, so most acrylic nests rely on a hydration chamber or regular watering, and cheap ones scratch easily.
  • Ytong (aerated concrete). Porous, so it absorbs water and releases humidity gradually — water it once or twice a week and the nest self-regulates. Great for moisture-loving species. Downsides: less crisp visibility, and it can grow mold if overwatered.
  • Sand/soil (natural setups). The classic look, and the ants dig their own tunnels, which is the behavior a lot of people got into the hobby to watch. Downsides: the ants decide where to dig, which is frequently against the back wall where you can't see them, and you can't inspect or intervene easily. Better as a display for established colonies than a home for a precious founding colony.

There's no wrong answer here — match the material to your species' humidity needs first, your viewing preference second.

The Outworld

An outworld is a separate open container connected to the nest by tubing — basically the colony's yard. It's where you put food, and where the ants dump trash and dead nestmates. This matters more than it sounds: ants naturally forage away from the nest and keep garbage out of it. Feed ants inside their nest and you get mold in the one place you can't clean. Any escape-proofed plastic container works; it doesn't need to be fancy. A smear of escape-prevention barrier (PTFE-based liquids are the standard) around the top rim keeps everyone home.

Food: Two Categories, Always

Every colony needs the same two things:

  • Carbohydrates — this fuels the workers. Sugar water or honey diluted with water, offered in a small cap or a liquid feeder. Always dilute honey; straight honey is thick enough for ants to get stuck in.
  • Protein — this becomes brood. The queen needs protein coming in to keep laying, and larvae need it to grow. Small crickets, mealworms, and — for small colonies — fruit flies are the standards. Pre-killed is safer and easier for young colonies. If you're using feeder insects from a pet store or insects you've collected, be aware pesticide exposure is a real risk with anything from outdoors; captive-bred feeders are the safe route.

A colony of twenty workers eats a fruit fly and a drop of sugar water, not a buffet. Remove uneaten protein within a day.

Heating: One Side Only

Many species are fine at room temperature, but most colonies grow noticeably faster with gentle warmth — brood develops quicker at higher temperatures. The tool is a heat cable or heat mat, and the rule is simple: heat one side of the setup only, never the whole thing. This creates a thermal gradient, and the ants move their brood to the temperature they want. Heat the entire nest and they have no escape if it's too warm — that's how colonies get cooked.

Rough targets: temperate species like Lasius and most Camponotus do well with a warm side around 75–82°F; desert species like many honeypot ants and harvesters appreciate a warm spot pushing the mid-80s. Cheap digital thermometer, warm side, done. And remember most temperate species need a cool dormant period in winter (diapause) — heating year-round isn't a favor to them.

What Not to Buy

  • Gel ant farms. The colorful gel cubes sold as complete ant habitats. The gel is a poor food source and a worse home — ants in them decline and die, reliably. They were designed as a short-term novelty, not husbandry. Skip them no matter how good the reviews look.
  • "Complete kits" built around a toy formicarium. If a kit's centerpiece is a flimsy plastic nest with no hydration system and no real ventilation, the included extras don't redeem it. You'll replace the whole thing within months.
  • Big elaborate nests for founding colonies. Not junk, just premature. Buy the nest your colony will need in six months, not the one that looks best on a shelf today.

Spend Money Where It Counts

Start with tubes and cotton. When the colony earns an upgrade, put your budget into one good nest matched to your species and a decent outworld. Skip the gadgets until you've kept ants long enough to know which ones would actually solve a problem you have. The best keepers I know run embarrassingly simple setups — consistency beats equipment every single time.
