Description

Myrmecocystus semirufus (Crimson Honeypot Ants)

Myrmecocystus semirufus, commonly known as the Crimson Honeypot Ant, is one of the most vibrant and eye-catching honeypot species found in the deserts of the southwestern United States. Distinguished by its reddish-orange hue and characteristic hanging repletes, M. semirufus adds a splash of color and activity to any ant collection. Their repletes swell with stored nectar, creating a brilliant display of glowing crimson droplets that shimmer beneath warm light.

In the wild, this species occupies sandy soils and sun-baked environments where temperatures fluctuate dramatically between day and night. In captivity, M. semirufus thrives in desert-style formicariums that provide both heat and dry ventilation. The species is moderately fast-growing, well-organized, and tolerant of temperature variation, making it a wonderful option for keepers who want something beautiful yet resilient.

Crimson Honeypot Ant colonies are highly photogenic and active during evening hours, providing excellent viewing opportunities. When paired with steady heat and a reliable food supply, they form impressive replete clusters that serve as living art—perfect for both educational display and enthusiast-level setups.
